Diamonds, for example, have a specific gravity of about 3.52, while quartz is closer to 2.65. You can find SG values in gemological reference books or by performing a hydrostatic weighing test. In practice, when you plug an SG value into the calculator, it converts the stone's volume to mass. Because one carat equals exactly 0.2 grams, the result is divided accordingly.

The Carat Calculation

The formula we use relates dimensions, shape factor, and specific gravity. Let L be length, W width, and D depth in millimeters. The shape factor k corrects for the facets, and SG is specific gravity. The estimated carat weight C is:

Imagine a sapphire that measures 7 mm long, 5 mm wide, and 3.2 mm deep. The SG of sapphire is about 3.98. Using the standard brilliant factor of 0.0061, the calculation becomes ((7 × 5 × 3.2 × 0.0061 × 3.98) / 200). Plugging these numbers into the calculator yields a carat weight close to 0.43 ct. While this method lacks the precision of a laboratory scale, it consistently provides an estimate within a few points of the actual weight, especially for symmetrical stones.
