Frame the opening around the real window—not its nickname

A window rough opening is the clear framed rectangle that receives the complete window unit. It must be large enough for the installer to level the sill, set the frame plumb and square, fit the specified flashing system, and shim or fasten the unit without forcing it out of shape. It should not be so loose that fasteners, shims, sealant joints, or exterior trim can no longer work as designed.

The most important input is the window's actual outside frame width and height. A catalog label such as “3040” can be a nominal or callout size; it does not guarantee a 36 by 48 inch physical frame across every brand and product line. Read the frame dimensions on the order acknowledgement, shop drawing, or installation sheet. If you are measuring an existing unit, measure the complete frame where the instructions define it—not the glass and not the trim.

Product instructions win. The presets below are planning conveniences based on named, current manufacturer documents. Clearances vary by product, installation type, combination units, accessories, flashing thickness, thermal movement, and wall system. Confirm the exact opening before framing or ordering a window.

The transparent rough-opening formula

In forward mode, each edge is added exactly once. The sill-pan field is separate because a pan, stacked flashing, or a manufactured sloped sill can use some of the vertical space that looked available on paper:

Rough opening width = frame width + left gap + right gap

Rough opening height = frame height + head gap + sill gap + sill-pan buildup

Reverse mode subtracts those same allowances from an existing opening. That gives the largest theoretical frame that fits the assumptions—not a promise that a stock window exists in that exact size. Keep the specified gaps intact when comparing the result with an order sheet.

What the presets mean

An Andersen installation guide specifies at least 1/4 inch around the unit and describes an opening 1/2 inch greater than the unit width and height. Pella's current architectural-design guidance distinguishes product families: its 2026 installation-clearance table gives 1/4 inch per side for listed fiberglass and vinyl single units and 3/8 inch per side for listed aluminum and aluminum-clad wood units. Pella also warns that combinations and installation materials may need more room.

This calculator applies a selected preset uniformly to all four edges as a planning starting point. That is deliberately easy to inspect and edit. If the product sheet gives a different head or sill gap, select the closest preset and overwrite the individual fields. A sill pan is not “free space”: Pella's rough-opening clearance note explains that flashing and sill-pan layers reduce usable clearance and that both inadequate and excessive gaps can compromise installation.

Forward sizing example

Suppose the order acknowledgement gives a frame size of 35 1/2 by 47 1/2 inches. The installation sheet calls for 1/4 inch on the left, right, and head, plus 1/4 inch at the sill. There is no additional pan buildup:

If a pan and its required air space consume another 1/8 inch, the planned height becomes 48 1/8 inches unless the product instructions say the listed sill clearance already includes that system. This is exactly why the pan field is visible rather than buried in a generic allowance.

Reverse sizing example

An existing framed opening measures 48 by 60 inches. With 1/4 inch required at every edge and no added sill buildup, the largest frame is 47 1/2 by 59 1/2 inches. If the selected sill system uses 1/8 inch beyond the 1/4-inch sill gap, maximum frame height falls to 59 3/8 inches. When ordering, use the nearest available frame size at or below those maximums and preserve every required edge gap.

Framing and flashing helpers

The calculated opening width is the clear distance between the jack studs; opening height is the clear distance from the prepared sill surface to the underside of the header. With one 1 1/2-inch jack stud on each side, a header spanning across the jacks has a planning cut length of rough-opening width plus 3 inches. That is only a length helper. The header's depth, number of plies, grade, fasteners, and bearing depend on wall loads, span tables, local rules, and sometimes engineering.

The tape estimator is also a purchasing helper, not an installation sequence. It totals one sill piece, two jamb pieces, and one head piece using your overlap allowance, then adds waste. Manufacturers differ on corner patches, shingling order, drainage paths, tape width, and whether the exterior sill edge remains open. Andersen's flashing guide, for example, illustrates cut lengths based on 9-inch extensions. Follow the flashing instructions for the window and water-resistive barrier.

Checking square, level, and plumb

A rectangular opening has equal corner-to-corner diagonals. Enter both field measurements and the calculator will report their difference. One Andersen guide uses a 1/8-inch diagonal difference as its square check, but your product sheet controls the tolerance. Equal diagonals do not prove the sill is level or the jambs are plumb, so check all three conditions with an appropriate level and verify the opening at several heights and widths. Bowed framing can pinch the middle even when the corners look correct.

How to use the calculator

  1. Choose frame to rough opening for new framing or opening to maximum frame when the hole already exists.
  2. Select inches or millimeters and enter the actual frame or clear opening dimensions.
  3. Load a planning preset, then replace any edge value with the product-specific instruction. Add only the sill-pan buildup not already included in the specified sill gap.
  4. Set quantity, jack-stud thickness, flashing overlap, and waste if you want material helpers. Optional diagonal measurements must use the same selected unit.
  5. Review both the exact dimensional result and the assumption line. Compare them with the order document and installation guide before cutting or purchasing.

Limits of this planning tool

Window rough opening questions

How much larger should a rough opening be than a window frame?

Use the exact product instructions. Some current guides use 1/4 inch around the unit, producing an opening 1/2 inch wider and taller than the frame; other products call for 3/8 inch per edge or larger combination-unit clearances.

Do I use nominal window size or actual frame size?

Use the actual outside frame dimensions or the manufacturer's explicitly stated frame size. A nominal or callout size may not be the physical window dimension.

Does a sill pan change rough opening height?

It can. Pan material, flashing layers, shims, and sloped-sill components consume clearance. Add their net buildup only when it is not already included in the product's specified sill allowance.

How do I check the opening for square?

Measure both corner-to-corner diagonals and compare them. Also verify that the sill is level, jambs are plumb, and framing is not bowed inward.

Does the header result tell me what lumber to use?

No. It estimates only a cut length across the opening plus jack-stud bearing. Structural header material and depth require applicable span tables, code, load information, and sometimes an engineer.
